During your annual eye examination, Dr. Cazares will check for any signs of eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration, among others.

Cataracts

Cataracts are the clouding of the eye’s focusing mechanism, the lens. Cataracts are the most common cause of vision loss in people over the age of 40, but they can occur at any age. Read more about cataracts: All About Vision – Cataracts

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that causes damage to the optic nerve–the part of the eye that relays information to the brain. Glaucoma usually has no symptoms in its early stages. In most cases, glaucoma is associated with higher than normal pressure inside of the eyes–a condition known as ocular hypertension. But glaucoma can occur even with normal pressures. Because it does not have symptoms early in the disease process, it is important for Dr. Cazares to check for this disease on a yearly basis, especially if anyone in your family has the condition. Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is a deterioration of the macula, which is the small part of the retina that is responsible for your sharp, central vision. Any task that requires attention to fine detail–reading, driving, recognizing faces–is dependent on the health of the macula. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss among older Americans, and due to the aging of the general population, the number of people affected by macular degeneration is expected to increase.
